What a 1/5 rating means
On the comedogenic scale, a 1 sits at the safe end of the scale — clogging is unlikely for most people. That places Beta Carotene in the range most people, including many with acne-prone skin, tolerate well.
One thing the number cannot tell you is concentration. Ingredients are listed in descending order, so Beta Carotene near the end of a label is present in tiny amounts and matters far less than the same ingredient near the top.
About Beta Carotene
It is an antioxidant added to protect the formula and the skin. The orange-red provitamin-A pigment found in carrots, palm fruit and algae, used as both a natural colourant and an antioxidant. The Fulton-derived table rates it 1, putting it in the low-risk band.
On a label it can read as Beta Carotene, Beta-Carotene, Provitamin A, Carotene — worth knowing when you scan an ingredient deck.
Beta Carotene in makeup and skincare
It rounds out serums, moisturisers, and some long-wear makeup. Its irritancy is rated separately at 0/5, which is low.
